Best of 2018

As usual, I haven’t been able to see/listen to everything I’d like, but here are my top five picks this year across movies, TV and podcasts…

Media Diary (December 2018)

Some things I’ve enjoyed lately, in no particular order, and not necessarily only recent stuff:

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Movie): So, so good

Bear Brook (Podcast): Chilling

Homecoming (TV): Loved the podcast, enjoying the show

Roma (Movie): Still processing this, it was extremely powerful

Believed (Podcast): Still listening through this (and being disturbed) on a recommendation from my wife

Tricky Dick and The Man in Black (TV): Great story that’s just as relevant for today’s absurd reality

Eighth Grade (Movie): Spot-on (at least from my vantage point as the father of kids around that age)

Broken Harts (Podcast): Social media smiles aren’t to be trusted

Aquaman (Movie): Big, dumb and pretty fun

Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath (TV): Remains great

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (Movie): The Coens, nailing it as always

Post Reports (Podcast): Great evening companion to The Daily

Hustlers, Hoaxsters, Pranksters, Jokesters and Ricky Jay (TV): Such a fascinating guy

Sorry To Bother You (Movie): Holy cow, this definitely took things up a notch

Ralph Breaks The Internet (Movie): Pretty fun, but I definitely prefer the original

United We Fan (Movie): Interesting look at the history of “save our show” fan campaigns (with a Gray Jones feature segment!)

Media Diary (November 2018)

Some things I’ve enjoyed lately, in no particular order, and not necessarily only recent stuff:

Enemies: The President, Justice & The FBI (TV): Can’t get enough of this

They’ll Love Me When I’m Dead & The Other Side of The Wind (Movies): A great documentary about the “lost” final Orson Welles movie, along with the now-completed movie itself

The Clinton Affair (TV): As someone slightly too young to pay full attention to this at the time, I found this series extremely compelling

UnErased: The History of Conversion Therapy in America (Podcast): A fearless and important series

Watergate (TV): Studying up for the imminent sequel (hey-o)

Halloween (Movie): I’d amazingly never seen this, and was a fan

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Movie): Reviews were mixed, but I thought it was fine, especially when Johnny Depp vaped out of a skull

Jonestown: Terror in The Jungle (TV): Chilling and amazing

Bohemian Rhapsody (Movie): Enjoyed it with my youngest son, who’s a huge Queen fan

Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj (TV): I used to work with this guy (!), and he’s totally nailing it
