Media Diary (May 2021)

Some stuff I’ve experienced lately (and not necessarily only new releases):

Halston (TV): Fabulous

The Breathing Room (Podcast): A much-needed point of view

The Handmaid’s Tale (TV): In great form this season

Hacks (TV): Loving this so far

Slow Burn (Podcast): How we got Iraq so wrong

Mortal Kombat (Movie): I didn’t hate it

Pray, Obey, Kill (TV): A fascinating look at murder in a Swedish religious group

Shrill (TV): Looked forward to every episode

The Sons of Sam: A Descent Into Darkness (TV): Creepy stuff

The Crime of The Century (TV): Absolute madness

Special (TV): Love this show’s POV

Deadwood (TV): Years ago I watched only the first season, remedying that with a full binge

Mythic Quest (TV): Charming as ever

Sasquatch (TV): Bigfoot always gets the blame

Quibi Unearthed

All jokes aside, the truth is that while Quibi failed in spectacular fashion last year, there were actually a few diamonds in the rough within their catalog. Now that Roku has made much of the content available, I thought I’d re-share some picks from my time with the service. Enjoy!

Big Rad Wolf : Good night “sweet” prince, this was one of your best

Reno 911!: Glad to have the gang back

You Ain’t Got These: A really interesting look at sneaker culture

Flipped: Can’t beat the cast

Blackballed: I was vaguely aware of the story when it unfolded, but this mini-documentary is fascinating

Last Looks: Great format and interesting stories

Dummy: Just like it says on the tin

Greatest of All TV (Revisited)

A few years ago I put together a list of all-time favorite shows. Time has marched on and I’ve gotten into lots of additional stuff, so while I reserve the right to append more later (Deadwood being a likely candidate), here’s the updated/re-ordered latest:

Drama:

Comedy:
