Some stuff I’ve experienced lately (and not necessarily only new releases):
Mank (Movie): Enjoyed this, which of course led me back to…
Citizen Kane (Movie): It had been a while, and it still (of course) rules
The Sopranos (TV): Slowly but surely correcting the embarrassing fact that I never watched this
Zappa (Movie): What a wild journey
Wonder Woman 1984 (Movie): Eh, it was fine
Soul (Movie): Enjoyed it, but this tweet about sums up my take
Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults (TV): I feel like the castration proposal should’ve set off a few more flags
F For Fake (Movie): Orson in a sweet cloak is my spirit animal
An American in Paris (Movie): That guy can dance
The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (Movie): Raised my respect level
The Stand (TV): Started a little slow, but I’m on board
The Last Blockbuster (Movie): Really want to make a pilgrimage
The Road To Wellville (Movie): Hadn’t seen this in years, and it’s still incredibly weird…
Nothing But Trouble (Movie): Not as weird as this absolute legend though
Alabama Snake (Movie): Fascinating and creepy
Gaslight (Movie): Young. Angela. Lansbury.
Happy Happy Joy Joy: The Ren & Stimpy Story (Movie): Interesting story, wouldn’t want to have worked there
My Octopus Teacher (Movie): Can’t believe he took that night dive (shudder)
Belushi (Movie): Tragic
My Psychedelic Love Story (Movie): I’d be annoyed by these people in seconds
Run (Movie): Pretty solid, can never go wrong with Sarah P.
Baby God (Movie): Liberties were taken
Man, what a year to try and pick out “best” stuff, especially on the movies side (though we still have Wonder Woman 1984 coming on Christmas Day!).
That said, here are my favorites from the year. The TV list is twice as long, because 2020…
I post a lot (too much 🙄) about my email newsletter, but that’s only because I’m having a great time writing it, and love that people seem to be into it.
If you haven’t already subscribed, and are looking for a steady source of content to fill the void that is December 2020, I invite you to sign up! It’s free to get one issue/week, or (through the end of the year) just $18 for a full year of three issues/week. 🤯
You never shut up about it, but what does the newsletter cover?
I generally share a featured post from this site, along with links, tweets and videos about (for the most part) technology, entertainment, politics, ’80s/’90s nostalgia and American evangelical heartbreak.
What’s in each of the three weekly issues?
The Sunday and Wednesday issues have different content but follow the same format (usually with a newer featured blog post on Sunday and one from the archives on Wednesday), and the Friday issue (called “Weekend Watches”) provides viewing recommendations. 📺
People are also saying that subscribers are more respected by their friends, more feared by their enemies and last longer in bed. 🤷
Alright, I’m convinced, where do I sign up?
👉 Right here, sweet friend.
