Media Diary (September 2020)

Some things I’ve experienced lately, in no particular order, and not necessarily only recent stuff:

Ratched (TV): I want another season immediately

I’m Thinking of Ending Things (Movie): This generally blew my face off

Rage (Book): Starting to think that this Trump guy may have made a few mistakes 🤷‍♂️

The Boys (TV): Diabolically great as always

Class Action Park (Movie): Mindblowing

Challenger: The Final Flight (TV): Heartbreaking and maddening

Cuties (Movie): An important, emotional story (subsequently ruined by online morons)

The Three-Body Problem (Book): Have just started this, but am already being pulled into its world

We Are Who We Are (TV): An interesting look at military base teen culture

Feels Good Man (Movie): That poor, poor artist 💀

Helter Skelter: An American Myth (TV): I’m perpetually fascinated by the Manson story

The New York Times Presents (TV): I liked this when it was The Weekly, and I feel like it’s been even better since the reboot

King of The Cruise (Movie): Powerful vibes from this guy

I Am A Killer: Released (TV): Quite a story

Coastal Elites (Movie): An interesting embrace of COVID constraints

Raised By Wolves (TV): Have just started this, but 👍 so far

The Social Dilemma (Movie): There’s certainly much more to clarify/investigate for those that were shocked by this (I’ve heard criticism of the Hong Kong stuff specifically), but it’s a decent jumping-off point

The Third Day (TV): Also early with this, but I’m intrigued

Pure (TV): As someone with severe OCD (including “Pure-O” episodes), it’s awesome to see a show diving into this subject matter

Postcards From The Edge

I’m a broken record regarding my disappointment with our local church’s whack-a-mole approach to the growing threat of misinformation, science denial, creepy/racist theocratic propaganda and general media illiteracy.

With this situation poised to get significantly worse over the next few months, rather than regurgitate my usual ominous song and dance, I’ll just let this updated batch of church and “friends of the church” Facebook posts (an irrelevant distinction given the medium) speak for themselves.

“Enjoy” I…guess? Here we go:

Weekend Watches

It’s been nearly a month since I expanded my Kyle’s Junk Drawer email newsletter to twice a week for paid subscribers, and I’m excited to keep the ball rolling with the addition of a new “Weekend Watches” issue every Friday.

These issues will be short and sweet, and designed to help provide some guidance as you stare slack-jawed into the “what should I watch tonight?” pandemic void.

The first one will come out later this week, and (along with Wednesday issues) will be available to all existing paid subscribers. If you’re not already signed up, I’m bringing back the special discount for new subscribers through 9/30:
