Media Diary (September 2023)

Here’s some stuff I’ve experienced lately (and not necessarily only new releases):

Mask Girl (TV): Absolutely nuts in the best possible way

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (Movie): Loved the “directly address the camera” approach, and I’m obviously a sucker for The Writing Hut

The Swan (Movie): Same deal here, and I look forward to seeing the final two shorts

Elon Musk (Book): Still in the middle, but I’m starting to think that this guy might be problematic

The Big Flop (Podcast): Fantastic new show, I pretty much applaud every selected topic

Deadlocked: How America Shaped The Supreme Court (TV): This kinda made me a light Earl Warren stan, who knew?

The Dream (Podcast): Glad it’s back, this time diving into “life coaches”

David Lynch: The Art Life (Movie): Had seen this years ago, but always a good refresher, and it sent me on a short Lynch bender…

Mulholland Drive (Movie): Had been a long time since I’d re-watched, and it’s definitely a powerhouse

Wild at Heart (Movie): I’d somehow never seen, and loved the (as expected) unhinged Cage and incredible Laura Dern (Willem Dafoe’s teeth alone are also worth the price of admission)

Blue Velvet (Movie): Always been near the top for me, and this re-watch cemented its place

Savior Complex (TV): Haven’t finished yet, but already fascinating and troubling

The YouTube Effect (Movie): Enjoyed it, but felt that it didn’t bring any big new revelations

Generation Porn (TV): I always like a “slice of life” look at marginalized people and professions

Road House (Movie): Completely shameful that I’d never seen, thankfully I’ve now righted the ship

The Continental (TV): I’m a sucker for John Wick mythology, but I don’t think this is in danger of sweeping the Emmys

Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me (Movie): An interesting look at her story and struggles

Superpower (Movie): Insane timing for that first interview

Pickleball Princess (Movie): Our old “pal” DJP is back with a new entry
